Gold Daytona reps have been stuck in a bad trade-off for years. Either you got a watch with the wrong movement — a modified 4130 with fake decorative plates slapped on — or you got something that weighed 20 grams less than it should and felt hollow on wrist. Pick one.
VSF Watch new 126518LN on Oysterflex solves both at the same time: a true Dandong 4131 movement and gen-matched weight at 98.55 grams, without bulking up the case. Here's how each part holds up against gen and the standard market alternatives.

1. Movement: Dandong 4131 vs. SH4131
The standard market version uses the SH4131, which is a modified 4130 built on 7750 architecture. It has an assembled decorative plate stack and a fake shock absorber. Stability is poor, servicing is difficult, and under a loupe the plate seams are visible.
VSF's Dandong 4131 is developed as a forward clone of the gen 4131, not a modified 4130. Integrated molding, real shock absorber, proper bridge layout. The bridge engravings are cleanly milled rather than the rough, shallow cuts on the SH version. Functionally, it's a column-wheel chronograph with vertical clutch — same architecture as gen. The chronograph pushers engage with a clean click and the seconds hand resets without stutter.
If you've handled gen Daytonas, the SH4131's chronograph feel gives it away. The Dandong doesn't.
2. Weight: 98.55g without case modification
This is the other half of what makes this release worth paying attention to. VSF combined stainless steel with a high-density metal insert to hit 98.55 grams for the watch head. Gen weighs 98.85 grams. That's a 0.3-gram difference, which is close enough that nobody is going to question it in hand.
For context, the competitor versions are off by a lot more. The full tungsten alloy version overshoots at 113.6 grams — 16 grams heavier than gen, and you feel it. The semi-tungsten SH4131 version comes in at 82.82 grams, 16 grams lighter than gen. Both are wrong enough to notice.
The trick VSF pulled is getting the weight right without adding material to the case. That matters because if you thicken the case to add mass, you lose the Daytona's profile. More on that in a second.
3. Case thickness: 12.1mm maintained
VSF held the case at 12.10mm, same as gen, verified by digital caliper. The full tungsten version from competing factories comes in at 12.50mm — adding about 0.4mm to make room for the heavier metal. That doesn't sound like much on paper, but on a Daytona, 0.4mm of extra mid-case changes how the watch sits. It goes from slipping under a shirt cuff to catching on it.
The crown guards, lug taper, and pusher geometry all match current-gen Daytona specs. VSF didn't re-use older case tooling.
4. Oysterflex strap: memory steel vs. metal blocks
The Oysterflex strap on gen uses a thin memory steel blade embedded inside the rubber. It keeps the strap's curve against the wrist and prevents it from deforming over time. VSF replicated this: flexible, elastic, holds its shape.
Standard market versions do something different. They embed a rigid metal plate inside the rubber to add weight, but the plate can't bend. The strap has poor rebound, sits flat instead of curving to the wrist, and is uncomfortable after a few hours of wear. It's one of those things you wouldn't know to check for until the watch arrives and feels wrong on your arm.
5. Bottom line
VSF's 126518LN fixes the two things that made gold Daytona reps hard to recommend: the movement and the weight. The Dandong 4131 is the right architecture. 98.55 grams is essentially gen weight. And the case stays at 12.1mm instead of ballooning to 12.5mm like the tungsten-heavy competitors.
The Oysterflex note matters more than it sounds: a bad strap ruins a watch regardless of how good the head is, and most market versions use one that doesn't flex properly. VSF got this right.
The usual caveats apply. PVD gold plating wears over time, especially on the clasp and case edges. Serviceability on the Dandong 4131 requires a watchmaker who knows the caliber — fewer of them around than for ETA-based movements. And make sure you're getting a VSF unit, not an SH4131 version being passed off as one. The weight and case thickness are the easiest things to verify if you have a scale and calipers.
