Day-Date reps have been stuck with the same problem for years: the movement. Every version on the market ran a modified 3135 that was never designed to drive a day and date complication. The day disc was finicky, the date change was unreliable, and the failure rate was high enough that a lot of buyers just avoided Day-Date reps entirely.

VSF spent three years developing a cloned 3255 movement to replace the 3135 hack job. Along the way, they also fixed the white gold color matching and the bracelet construction. Here's what changed.

1. Movement: Dandong 3255

The old approach was a modified 3135 with a day module stacked on top. It worked sometimes. When it didn't, the day disc would get stuck between positions or the date wouldn't flip cleanly at midnight. Repair costs added up.

The Dandong 3255 is a ground-up clone of the gen 3255 caliber. VSF claims about 99% parts interchangeability with gen, which matters more for serviceability than anything else — if a part fails, a watchmaker who knows gen 3255 architecture can work on this without having to fabricate anything custom. Power reserve is 72 hours, same as gen. The movement runs on a full balance bridge rather than a single balance cock, which improves shock resistance.

The day and date both flip instantaneously at midnight. On the old 3135-based versions, the change was slow and the discs sometimes overshot. This doesn't.

2. White gold tone

Stainless steel looks different from white gold. Steel is cold and flat. White gold has a faint warmth to it, almost imperceptible unless you see them side by side, at which point it's obvious. Standard Day-Date reps use bare steel or a rhodium plating that reads as harsh cold white. VSF formulated a plating with a slight warm undertone that matches gen white gold.

The catch is that it's still plating. It will wear at the edges over time, same as any plated rep. The clasp and the inner links take the most abuse. If you wear the watch daily, expect the plating to thin at contact points within a year or so. That's not a VSF issue, it's a plating issue on every rep.

3. Weight and case thickness: 12.10mm

VSF added mass with a high-density core but held the case at 12.10mm, same as gen. Competitor versions that use tungsten inserts to add weight bulk up to around 12.73mm, which sounds small but ruins the Day-Date's profile. The Day-Date case has a flat, elegant silhouette that doesn't tolerate extra thickness. At 12.73mm, the mid-case looks swollen and the watch sits wrong on wrist.

4. President bracelet: 25 links

The President bracelet is one of the harder bracelets to replicate because the semi-circular links need to articulate cleanly without gaps. VSF's version has the correct 25-link count and the links sit flush against each other. There's no visible gap between links when the bracelet is at rest.

Cheaper versions stuff tungsten cores into steel links to add weight, but the assembly leaves visible seams between the core and the outer shell. Dirt gets in, the gaps widen over time, and the bracelet starts to look like what it is: two pieces of mismatched metal pressed together. VSF's approach avoids this by using a single integrated molding process.

5. Blue dial

VSF bought a gen deep blue Day-Date dial and reverse-engineered it. The sunburst is tight and even, with the rays radiating cleanly from the center without visible banding or dead spots. The baton markers are beveled consistently on all sides. The coronet at 12 is sharp under a loupe. Standard market dials use a darker, flatter blue with less defined sunburst, and the markers tend to have softer edges that read as rounded rather than crisp under magnification.

Bottom line: The Dandong 3255 is the main reason this release exists. If you've held off on a Day-Date rep because the 3135-based versions were too unreliable, the 3255 fixes that. The movement architecture is correct, the power reserve is 72 hours, and the day/date complications flip properly. The case weight and bracelet construction are done right. The white gold plating is good but it's still plating — factor that into your expectations.

If you're buying, verify the movement. A real Dandong 3255 has the full balance bridge and the correct rotor engraving depth. If the seller can't show you the movement through the caseback, assume it's old 3135 stock.
