The Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01039 is the 47mm Carbotech GMT built for the 36th America's Cup. It is the larger, more complicated sibling to the 42mm Luna Rossa 1563. The sailcloth-textured grey dial and the red GMT hand set it apart from the standard Carbon Submersibles. 47mm in carbon means the case is big but the weight stays manageable. VSF Watch Factory got the sailcloth dial texture and the GMT movement right.

The dial. The grey sailcloth texture is what gives the 1039 its identity. Instead of matte black or blue sunburst, Panerai used a woven fabric-like pattern that references the technical sailcloth on the Luna Rossa race boat. It is grey, not black. The texture is visible up close and reads as industrial. White Super-LumiNova dots and batons sit against it with good contrast. The red accents come from the small seconds hand at 9 and the central GMT arrow. "LUNA ROSSA CHALLENGE 36TH AMERICA'S CUP" is printed at 6. It is a long inscription, but the grey dial keeps it from feeling crowded. VSF got the sailcloth pattern right and the dial text is correctly placed.
The GMT function. The central red-tipped GMT hand tracks a second time zone on a 24-hour scale. The independent jumping hour hand adjusts local time in one-hour clicks without stopping the running seconds or the GMT hand. For international travel or tracking race time zones, the dual-time setup is the right tool. The red arrow on the GMT hand matches the red small seconds hand. Two red elements on an otherwise grey, black, and white dial. Enough color to read fast without competing.
The case. 47mm Carbotech. Compressed carbon fiber sheets with a polymer binder. Matte black with layered striations. Each case is unique. The crown guard and bezel are both Carbotech. The bezel has Carbotech graduations and rotates with firm clicks. The luminous pip is centered at 12. Carbon makes the weight manageable at 47mm. Without it, a steel case of this size would be a lot to wear all day. VSF's Carbotech finish is consistent with their other Carbon Submersibles.
The movement. Dandong P.9010 GMT. Central GMT hand plus independent jumping hour hand. Date driven through the hour hand. This is the correct movement for the 47mm Submersible GMT and it is the same architecture VSF uses in the Pole2Pole and other GMT models. Winding is smooth and the date change is clean.
The strap. Black rubber accordion diver strap with a DLC-coated titanium trapezoidal pin buckle. The accordion design flexes with wrist movement. The DLC titanium buckle matches the dark Carbon case and keeps the weight down. Strap changes are fast. This case takes black rubber or grey canvas naturally. The dial already has enough texture and color that a plain black strap is the right call.
